Churchill Ki Jagah Hedgehog: Bank Of England Ke Note Par Janwar
The Bank of England has announced the four animals that will feature on its banknotes: the Atlantic puffin, barn owl, buff-tailed bumblebee and European hedgehog. The barn owl, bumblebee and hedgehog topped a public vote in their categories; the puffin was included to celebrate marine life and the coastline, according to the Bank. More than 2.5 million votes were cast by 478,531 people from a shortlist of 18 mammals, birds, amphibians, insects and fish.
The buff-tailed bumblebee received 360,399 votes, nearly 90,000 more than the barn owl. The red fox and common kingfisher received more nominations than the Atlantic puffin, which was still selected as the most popular marine animal. Each creature will be the central image of a £5, £10, £20 or £50 note, but no decision has been made on which animal goes on which note.
It will be the first time since 1970 that the reverse of Bank of England notes no longer features notable figures from history; notes now in circulation show Sir Winston Churchill, Jane Austen, JMW Turner and Alan Turing. The Bank said the move was primarily to stop counterfeiting. Chief cashier Victoria Cleland said the four animals “not only showcase the great variety of wildlife we have in the UK but will also enhance the security of our banknotes,” Incoming chief cashier Rhys Phillips said designing, testing and printing could take years.
