ICANN is accepting applications for new top-level domains for the first time in years, and has announced 1,615 applications from 481 applicants so far. Ten companies, including Meta and OpenAI, applied for .agent. Seven companies, including OpenAI, applied for .agi, and six, including OpenAI, applied for .asi, which The Verge characterises as an attempt to follow President Trump's demand to switch from “artificial intelligence” to “super intelligence”.
Four companies applied for .intelligence, and Meta is one of two applicants for .superintelligence. OpenAI applied for a total of 15 top-level domains and Meta for 21. The batch contains 345 brand applications, including .applebees, .bankofamerica, .zillow and .zoom. The Verge's headline says the AI-flavoured extensions are about to be the hot new domains.
Meta applied for .facebook, .instagram, .messenger, .meta, .frommeta and .threads; Bluesky applied for .bsky; and Anthropic applied for .anthropic and .claude. The Verge says nothing will be made official before sometime next year. Writer David Pierce noted: “It’s interesting to see so many brands go for their own domain, which only Google and a few others have accomplished before.”
