NMC bans AI-made testimonials and claims like 'best' and '100% success' in doctors' advertising.

The National Medical Commission issued new ethical advertising guidelines on Tuesday, effective immediately. Registered medical practitioners and hospitals are barred from using AI-generated content to advertise services, solicit patients, or disseminate unverifiable information about diagnoses, treatments or outcomes. AI cannot be used to create synthetic patient testimonials, voices, clinical outcomes or fake endorsements, or to misrepresent the nature or quality of medical services.

Doctors cannot pay to manipulate search rankings on search engines and apps. Unverified claims such as “best”, “number one”, “most trusted”, “guaranteed cures” or “100% success” are prohibited. Limited-period discounts, coupons, gift packages or referral benefits are barred if likely to encourage unnecessary consultations. Doctors may use social media for factual, non-promotional health education, and hospitals may share objective details; patient photographs require valid consent and safeguards.

Patient testimonials, before-and-after images and treatment-success claims that could mislead are prohibited. Penalties start with a warning and mandatory ethics training for a first violation, censure and a monetary penalty for a second, and suspension for three to six months for a third, with six to 12 months for serious violations. Repeated violations can lead to removal from the medical register for one to three years.
