Gas Ka Pool Bhara Hai, Pakistan Aur Qatar Contract Dobara Dekhenge
Pakistan and Qatar have agreed to review a multimillion-dollar LNG supply contract amid a gas glut in Pakistan. The two sides have already signed a deal for diverting 24 LNG cargoes to other destinations in the current calendar year. Pakistan State Oil (PSO) and QatarEnergy have a 15-year sale-purchase agreement covering 2016 to 2031, and a second contract runs for 10 years from 2021 to 2031.
Under both deals, PSO receives 6.75 million tonnes of LNG, or 108 cargoes, each year. The agreements are on a take-or-pay basis; the article says surplus cargoes sold abroad generate profit for QatarEnergy while all loss is borne by PSO. In 2023 the government authorised PSO to negotiate a reduction of two cargoes per month, and 24 cargoes were reduced in the 2026 annual delivery plan.
QatarEnergy served PSO a price review notice dated March 7, 2026 in respect of SPA-II, and PSO served one on QatarEnergy dated March 19, 2026 in respect of SPA-I. If no agreement is reached within six months of a notice, either party may terminate, with termination taking effect at the end of the contract year in which the notice is served.
