Donald Trump is looking to create a presidential retreat similar to Camp David at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. According to a letter dated 3 September from the golf course's attorney to the county commission, reported by the Palm Beach Post, Trump offered to deem the club a “U.S. Presidential Golf Course” for presidents and visiting heads of state.
The letter states the club would provide access to all its facilities at “no cost to the federal government” and free membership to future presidents, and would front construction costs as a “gift” to Americans and local residents. The 27-hole course is described as having a luxurious clubhouse, a gift store and frequent member social events. The club would also provide accommodations to visiting foreign dignitaries.
Mr Trump said in the Oval Office on Wednesday that Secret Service officials first suggested the idea. He said: “This wouldn't be for me” and “It's about as safe as they could possibly get,” Camp David, in Maryland, is staffed by uniformed members of the US Navy and Marine Corps, with Marines guarding the perimeter and airspace restricted. The BBC has contacted the Secret Service for comment; no response is reported.
