On Thursday, the Ministry of Communications called the claim that Starlink is being blocked by certain oligarchs in India “baseless and misconceived”. The response followed a remark by Elon Musk on Wednesday, in a reply to a post arguing India needs Starlink to bridge connectivity gaps. He wrote: “Unfortunately, we are being blocked by certain oligarchs in order to maintain their monopolistic chokehold on the Indian people. You can guess who they are … This is a crime against the people of India!”
The ministry said: “As such, the suggestion that the framework or its application is unfair or discriminatory is baseless and misconceived,”. Telecom licences have been granted to three Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite services: Starlink, Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio Satellite Communications. A security assessment is under way for all three. Per the ministry, “At present, all the three entities are at broadly the same regulatory stage.”
According to Hindustan Times, the licensees still need spectrum allocation and security clearances before commercial services can begin, and Starlink is also awaiting foreign-investment-related clearances. The Hindu reported that Mr. Musk's post came hours after Starlink executive Lauren Dreyer said she hoped the service would be live in India by 2027, and that Reliance Jio has argued the Supreme Court's 2012 2G spectrum judgement prohibits administrative assignment of satellite spectrum.
